All About You: Interactive Art
A collection of interactive artworks that respond in real time to the viewer's brain activity, facial expression and movement.
All About You is a collection of interactive artworks that change in response to viewers' brain rhythms, movement and facial expressions in real time. This artwork will be one of the first of its kind in terms of its scale and the range of human signals the art responds to. When viewed in a gallery audiences can choose to watch a demo or try out the artwork themselves by standing before a camera and wearing a headband.
The work fuses a number of inputs to generate an output art image that is responsive to the human viewer. Signals such as from EEG (electroencephalography), heart rate, movement, gesture and facial expression can be used in isolation or combined to trigger changes in the art, allowing the viewer to interact with the art, control it, or simply view the image changing in response to their signals and watch what emerges.
First, an artwork is created in Touchdesigner software from a range of visuals which may include photos/videos, abstract images or AI generated pictures, and subject to a transformational pipeline to create the art. Then wearable and camera data is livestreamed to the software where certain signal inputs are used to control a number of visual parameters.
As the artist creating the work I hope All About You will stimulate thought about what sort of ambient environments and virtual décor could exist in the future, and how humans might co-evolve with the technology.
Another important concern is the use of cognitive and emotional data by third parties, and in my 2025 exhibition I surveyed visitors' opinions on the issue.
